Visitors looking at travelling to Queensland’s Outback are urged to continue with their travel plans and experience the region while it flourishes with new life, Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said today.

Mr Lawlor who is meeting with the Mayors of Paroo, Maranoa, Quilpie and Diamintina Shire Councils today at Parliament House said the Outback was recovering following the floods and visitors should take advantage of great deals currently on offer to travel west and witness brimming waterholes and rivers teeming with life following the rain.

“Many parts of the Outback are accessible and it is business as usual for Central West and North West, which were not affected by flooding,” Mr Lawlor said.

Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan recently announced a joint Tourism Queensland and Outback Queensland Tourism Association campaign themed ‘after the summer rain’.

"This campaign aims to entice holidaymakers to visit while the region is flourishing with birdlife, wildlife and wildflowers," she said.

“The campaign offers buy-one-get-one-free deals, discounted entry to attractions and discounted tours for those seeking some adventure travel.

“With these travel deals available until the end of June, this is the perfect time to soak up the stunning landscapes, wide open skies, cultural history and fantastic hospitality of the west.

Mr Lawlor said drive visitors should check road conditions by logging on to RACQ’s road conditions report at www.racq.com.au or ringing the RACQ road report hotline on 1300 130 595.”

Tourism Research Australia's National Visitor Survey showed domestic holiday visitors to Queensland’s Outback had increased by nine percent in 2009.

“This was an influx of 152,000 holiday visitors during 2009, which is a great result and testimony to the enduring appeal of Queensland’s Outback for Australian travellers,” Mr Lawlor said.

“I would encourage all Queenslanders to make the most of these amazing conditions combined with great travel offers and head west for their next holiday.”

Mr Lawlor said those wishing to book a Queensland’s Outback escape could visit www.adventureoutback.com.au or browse the Queensland Holidays website at www.queenslandholidays.com.au.
