Minister for Racing, Peter Lawlor today recognised the late Leo Williams for his contribution to Queensland and Australian business and sport.

Mr Williams sadly passed away last night and is survived by his wife Nancye and children Nicole, Paul, Anthony and Julienne.

Mr Lawlor said Leo was a great family man and a good friend.

“He was also one of Queensland’s leading solicitors," Mr Lawlor said.

“Leo was a man of integrity and honesty, dedicated to his family and profession and the many sporting organisations he involved himself in as a participant and administrator.

"It was these qualities that earned him the respect of many.

“He served as a company director for more than 25 companies across a range of industries including resources, sport, construction, media and hospitality.

“He also served as the President of the Tattersall’s Club for several years.

“It was in fact his service to law, the community and sport that saw him awarded an Order of Australia (AO) in 1999," he said.

Mr Lawlor said he was a true Queenslander, representing his state in not only his business dealings but sport.

“Leo represented his state in rugby union, water polo and swimming,” Mr Lawlor said.

“However his proudest sporting achievement was not as a player but as Chairman of the Rugby World Cup when he was joined by the Queen in handing John Eales the 1999 William Web Ellis Cup.

“Leo’s contribution and involvement in Queensland’s horse racing industry will also be sadly missed.

“He really loved the horse racing industry and was heavily involved as a member of Brisbane, Gold Coast and Queensland horse racing clubs.

“His contribution to the industry was not only as a club member and horse owner but as Chairman of the Racing Appeals Tribunal.

“He will be remembered for his fairness and sympathy for battlers.

“Our thoughts and sympathy are with Leo’s family during this difficult time, he will be sadly missed.”
