Warning on unlicensed Gold Coast travel agent

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is warning people against booking a holiday through an unlicensed Gold Coast travel agent trading as Coomera Cruise and Travel.

Fair Trading Minister Peter Lawlor said Jill Baker, director of Baker Taylor Pty Ltd, was working in the industry without a licence.

"Ms Baker is known to currently go by the business name of Coomera Cruise and Travel," Mr Lawlor said.

"Ms Baker previously had a travel business trading as Travelworld Upper Coomera at the Hub Shopping Centre, however the franchise arrangement with Travelworld no longer exists."

Mr Lawlor said the OFT cancelled Ms Baker’s licence in January this year because her membership with the Travel Compensation Fund - a pre-requisite for holding travel agent licence in Queensland - had been terminated.

"Ms Baker has been made well aware of the fact that she is now breaking the law by working without a licence," Mr Lawlor said.

"The OFT is therefore investigating the actions of this agent and will pursue any breaches of legislation."

Mr Lawlor said consumers could do a free, online check through the OFT website as to whether a travel agent was licensed.

"You can look up the name of the person who holds the licence, their registered business name and place of business, status of licence and licence number.

"Travel and holidays cost a lot of money and you put a lot of trust in these people to make arrangements for you. It's worth doing a check to see if they are licensed."

Mr Lawlor said there were good reasons why travel agents were licensed.

"Firstly, it enables them to be checked out by the OFT to ensure that they are suitable to hold a licence," Mr Lawlor said.

“Secondly, the Travel Compensation Fund may help people get money back if they've suffered a financial loss as a result of an agent's activities, should they fail to account for their client’s funds."

To report information to the OFT or lodge a complaint about a travel agent visit www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au or call 13 13 04.

Under the Travel Agents Act 1988, people who work unlicensed as travel agents face fines of up to $100,000.
