With the World Cup about to kick off around the world, the Queensland Government is reminding patrons of licensed venues’ opening hours.
Minister responsible for liquor regulation Peter Lawlor said only a handful of premises have decided to open additional hours during the international event.
“With the time difference, many of the games are scheduled to air in the very early hours of the morning here in Queensland,” Mr Lawlor said.
“A few premises will be opening their doors – with or without alcohol – to get behind their teams throughout the international event.
“I encourage those brave enough to support their team during the cold mornings to contact their local venue to confirm their operating hours throughout the World Cup.”
Licensed premises are able to apply for temporary approval to trade up to 5am, or submit a request to remain open without selling alcohol.
There is no discretion under the Liquor Act 1992 to relax the lockout, so the usual 3am lockout continues.
“The lockout is one way we are bringing about a safer environment for both workers and patrons,” Mr Lawlor said.
“Patrons may have to enter premises earlier than 3am to watch early morning games but again I encourage fans to check with their local venue.
“My best advice is to plan your football-watching mornings.”
Casinos are not subject to a lockout and are regulated under different legislative arrangements. Casinos are considered a low risk area as they operate under stricter conditions regarding security and surveillance.
Venues wishing to alter their trading hours for the World Cup are encouraged to contact the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation on 13 13 04.
All applications are assessed on a case by case basis, with a focus on the potential risk involved and the licensee’s commitment to harm minimisation strategies. Last changed: Jul 22 2010 at 10:59 AM
