Minister responsible for gaming Peter Lawlor today launched a new in-venue campaign targeting Queensland gamblers in gambling venues.

“The new materials engage people with novel, humorous odds to educate them about the unlikelihood of a win,” Minister Lawlor said.

“All gaming venues in Queensland are required to display information about odds of winning and it is being presented in a way that will cut through the often cluttered environment of these venues.

“People will be drawn to the imagery and the amusing key messages.”

The new materials will be distributed to over 2000 gambling providers throughout the State.

The research behind the campaign shows that the existing promotional materials were often difficult to see. The new materials tested well indicating the materials promoted a significant increase in gamblers’ awareness and understanding of the odds of winning, self exclusion options and access to help.

“The research showed that 80 per cent of gamblers who responded believed the materials would positively impact on their gambling behaviour.

“The Queensland Government has long recognised that problem gambling affects a small minority of people, but one problem gambler is one too many.

“The 2008-09 Queensland household gambling survey results show that problem gambling is now affecting just 12 000 Queenslanders, or 0.37 per cent of the adult population, down from 0.47 per cent in 2006-07. The figure has been dropping continuously since the strategy was implemented in 2001,” said Minister Lawlor.
