The Griffith University athletics track will remain untouched during construction of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct after alternative land was identified to accommodate new car parking requirements.

Local MP Peter Lawlor welcomed the announcement that the running track would be retained as a valuable community facility.

“It’s good to see that the State Government was able to work through the issue, with all parties involved, and find the best solution for the community,” the Member for Southport said.

Mr Lawlor said construction of the $1.5 billion Gold Coast University Hospital, the private hospital and two stations for Gold Coast Rapid Transit would require a significant number of car parking spaces to accommodate construction workers and students.

“Initial planning identified land occupied by the athletics track as an option for new parking spaces to cater for the influx of cars,” Mr Lawlor said.

“Further analysis by the Coordinator-General found that car parking demand could be managed by staggering construction timelines of the private hospital that neighbours the university hospital.

“Basically this means that rather than having a spike in parking demand due to a large increase in workers at one time, parking demand will be spread over a longer period of time.”

Mr Lawlor said the precinct was a massive undertaking with extremely complex logistical issues.

“There has, and will continue to be significant government investment in infrastructure within the precinct over the next five years to support its development and create new jobs,” he said.

“The State Government will continue to consult with the community and other stakeholders during this important period of infrastructure development for the Gold Coast.”
