	Parliamentary Speeches During a typical sitting day I am able to make speeches and ask questions on issues that affect or are important to the residents of Southport, raise issues of public importance, debate legislation, present petitions on behalf of constituents and speak on condolence motions. Questions without notice are asked of Ministers and answered during Question Time. Questions on notice are usually asked when a more detailed answer is required and are in writing, and are forwarded by the Clerk of the Parliament to the relevant Minister who prepares a written answer which is presented to Parliament. QUESTION ON NOTICE – flying fox roosts December 1, 2011 – 3:55 pm With reference to flying fox colonies which are established around Queensland and in some locations there are in excess of 100,000 animals and significant community impact— What is being done to protect communities from the impact of flying fox roosts? QUESTION ON NOTICE – Hendra virus December 1, 2011 – 3:53 pm As the Hendra virus and the risk of transmission through flying fox colonies has received a lot of attention, will the Minister advise what role DERM is playing to mitigate the spread of the virus? Strategic Cropping Land Bill December 1, 2011 – 2:03 pm I support the Strategic Cropping Land Bill. I would like to address the aspect of extensive consultation that was undertaken in the development of the strategic cropping land policy. In recent times Queensland’s cropping land resources have been subject to increased land use competition across some of the state’s most important economic sectors—the agriculture and resources sectors and the urban development sector. This competition has seen community concerns increase in relation to the effects of development on our best cropping land. In order to achieve a balance between competing interests, the government has undertaken extensive consultation with key stakeholders during development and implementation of the strategic cropping land policy and considered all public feedback. The Queensland government is committed to adopting best practice regulatory principles and to ensuring that new regulatory arrangements are developed in a rigorous and transparent manner. WATER AND OTHER LEGISLATION AMENDMENT BILL December 1, 2011 – 1:47 pm I support the Water and Other Legislation Amendment Bill.
