State News - 2011

Blog – Elderly drivers

One of the points often raised to support the “do nothing” option regarding the driving ability of older drivers is that “younger drivers and hoons cause just as many accidents”. While this has some basis in fact, the problem with young drivers has no relevance to the issues associated with older drivers.

$6.8 billion to build it back better

Recovery from the greatest set of natural disasters in Queensland’s history will be funded through the State’s largest ever Budget for reconstruction.

“Following our harrowing summer, the bill for the reconstruction effort will be $6.8 billion over four years to build Queensland back better, with more than $2.7 billion of this provided directly to local governments,” Premier Anna Bligh said.

Bill-busting ClimateSmart Home Service gets boost

Queenslanders will receive even more money-saving devices to help knock-down their household bills, under a new and improved ClimateSmart Home Service.

Budget response

I support the Appropriation Bill and associated bills. This budget is first and foremost about rebuilding Queensland after the natural disasters the state experienced earlier this year. Fortunately, the Gold Coast avoided these disasters and the need to undertake the rebuilding which is required in other parts of the state and which is budgeted to cost $6.8 million. We heard complaints from the opposition about inadequate money allocated here, there and everywhere. I did not hear the members for Lockyer and Gregory, for instance, complaining about the $6.8 million that will be spent on the rebuilding as a result of the disasters.

LNP votes against fairer water prices for South east Queenslanders

Minister for Energy and Water Utilities Stephen Robertson said the LNP voted against fairer water prices for South east Queenslanders in Parliament overnight. Mr Robertson said it was only due to the Bligh Government that the Fairer Water Prices for SEQ Amendment Bill 2011 was passed which will cut the cost of water bills for South east Queensland householders and small businesses from 1 July 2011.

Speech: Elderly Drivers

How often have we said that you never know what is around the corner? Quite often I have said it myself, but not thought deeply about it. However, a recent event gave me an example of exactly what it means and how a completely unforeseen and unpredictable event can devastate our lives.

Reducing Greentape for Business

The Bligh Government will take a razor to green tape under proposed reforms, significantly reducing paper work for businesses and potentially saving them up to $12.1 million. The statewide Greentape Reduction Project will simplify and fast track environmental approvals for hundreds of businesses starting up operations in Queensland, without compromising on environmental protection.

Pool owners save under new plan

A new energy strategy will help Queenslanders save on their electricity bills and help better manage peak electricity demand. One key initiative will help pool owners save up to 40 percent on their pool energy running costs by making it easier for them to access the cheaper Tariff 33 electricity supply.

Investing in skills for the future

Young people looking to start their career or people looking to change industries will benefit from the Bligh Government’s $50 million annual investment in skills. Grants of up to $2 million are now available for training programs to head off future skills shortages and create jobs for Queenslanders.
